Plan your design. Start by asking yourself what the purpose of the shirt is. If you plan to advertise your company or band, you will have to emphasize visibility, clarity, catchiness, and logo. Keep in mind that the simpler the design, the easier it will be to create your t-shirt.

If you are making a more artistic shirt, you should focus on color coordination, originality, and composition.

Think about the overall tone and effect. Keep in mind what you want your t-shirt to say to others. Do you want something dramatic? Funny? Minimalistic? Commercial? Artistic? Cartoonish? Maybe you want to put something on your t-shirt that makes others think about a certain aspect of the world.

Pick a color scheme. Keep your tone in mind when picking your color scheme. If you are designing your t-shirt in an attempt to make people aware about genocide in the Congo, you do not want to pick hot pink and fluorescent yellow for your color scheme. Make sure you know the fundamentals of matching and coordinating colors.

Keep in mind that complementary colors are: red/green, blue/orange, yellow/purple.

Lay your t-shirt on a flat surface. Make sure there are no wrinkles. Place the paper stencil on top of the t-shirt, where you would like your design to be. Place the screen on top, making sure that the screen and design are straight.

A good idea is to clip your shirt down to a firm piece of cardboard. Doing this will ensure that your t-shirt remains flat and unwrinkled. It will also making moving your t-shirt to a safe spot to dry much easier.

Spread a tablespoon of ink at the top of the screen. You will need to use screen printing fabric ink (a ready-made ink is the way to go if you are just learning how to screen-print.)

Hold the screen down with one hand. With the other hand (preferably your dominant hand) place the squeegee above the ink and pull the ink down along the screen. Repeat this process until your whole design has been covered with ink. Wait a few moments for the ink to soak into the shirt.[3]

Hold the fabric down with one hand. Lift the screen up slowly, starting at the bottom and pulling up and away from the t-shirt. Admire your design. Let your shirt dry in a safe place, making sure that the ink isn’t touched.

Place the screen and design on the next t-shirt (if you are making more than one.) The design should stick to the screen. You must transfer the screen quickly so that the ink doesn’t dry on the screen between shirts (ink is super hard to wash out of the screen once it is dry.)

Wash your screen once you are done making your shirts. Wash it in cold water and scrub it with a sponge to get the ink out. Let the screen air dry.

Embellish the image. Play with filters, colors, brightness, contrast, saturation, or any other effects at your disposal. Add lines, flourishes, splatter effects, and other embellishments that might make the design more dynamic (where appropriate). Make sure that the entire layout is internally consistent by keeping proportions reasonable, styles consistent, and colors cohesive.

Add text. Though fancy fonts are fun to play with, you should emphasize readability above all else. You can download free fonts from the internet or even make your own. Read up on how to add fonts to your PC, Illustrator, or Photoshop if necessary. To keep the text from sticking out like a sore thumb, make sure any relevant filters affecting your overall image are also applied to the font. (If you’re working with layers, this might be as simple as dragging your font layers below layers contacting over-arching photo effects.)

Decide where you are going to order your t-shirts from and determine the cost per shirt. Ordering t-shirts for your family reunion from a wholesaler will save you lots of money.

Create t-shirt order forms for your family. The forms should include t-shirt sizes (both youth and adult), payment information and a section to suggest the theme and color of the shirts

Record the orders you receive on a "T-shirt Roster" using an excel spreadsheet or another form of table, making sure to keep track of sizes and payments.
